Planning to undertake a transfer to a new college or university? Read this article at Tej Kohli blog for some useful tips…

One of the best things about studying in America is the ease with which students can shift from one university or college to another. It is not uncommon to see a student from California transferring to Michigan, or student studying in a small private college transferring to a large public university.

Students who are completing their lower division general education from a community college van switch to a larger university to pursue upper division courses and complete their bachelor’s degree.

How important is accreditation?

We usually don’t recommend transfers from or to institutions that are not regionally accredited. If you’re attending a college that lacks regional accreditation, it is quite likely that courses completed will not transfer to an accredited college.

Making Transfers easy

Many universities and colleges have special agreements called articulation agreements with other colleges. Such agreements allow seamless transfer with little or no loss of money and time. For example, an engineering student may study for three years at the undergraduate level at one college, then transfer to another college for two or more years to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree, at the end of 5-year program. These arrangements are also known as 3+2 programs.

Most community colleges have articulation agreements with colleges and universities offering a 4-year course. In California, all the 106 community colleges have articulation agreements with the California state university system and university of California system. So, is a student successfully completes the general education requirements, he or she can transfer and complete the last 2 years of bachelor’s degree. Transferring to a new college or university is quite easy. With a little future planning, a transfer can be a best way to achieve your career goals.

In the America, the word School denotes any place where people come to learn. A college or a university can be called a school. The word school stands for any English language institute, graduate program or high school.

College or university follows after high-school. In the US, a college is not a secondary school or high-school. All the college and university courses start in the thirteenth year of the school, when a student reaches 17 or maybe 18 years of age. A two-year college gets you an Associate’s degree, while a foure year program or university gets you a bachelor’s degree. Colleges or universities that offer these degrees are known as ‘undergraduate schools’.

A university is a larger school with multiple colleges and offer courses which can be pursued after secondary education. Every university has at least one college where students can acquire a bachelor’s degree. The other schools are generally “graduate” aka “postgraduate” schools where students can acquire advanced or specialized degrees. Hence, a university provides both the bachelor’s degree and graduate degrees like the LLM and Ph.D.

A bachelor’s degree can be earned at either a university or a college. However, the US students prefer calling it a ‘college’ ratjer than university when referring to the the four-year undergraduate program and the bachelor’s degree. You will often hear them say ‘going to college’ and ‘college degree’ when they talk about undergraduate programs at either a university or a college.

Most colleges are independent schools which are isolated from the university campus. A few colleges are a part of the university and are located within the university campus. Some colleges offer graduate programs in selected majors. But usually it is the universities where students can do graduate programs. Therefore, most Americans use the word “university” instead of “college” when they talk about graduate programs.

Conclusion

The US students use the word “college ” while referring to undergraduate programs, and the word “university” when talking about the graduate programs.

Tej Kohli , who has lived in both the US and the UK, says that there is a considerable difference between the English vocabulary and usage in both the nations. So, just being proficient in UK English needn’t necessarily mean that learning American English would be easy, and vice-versa. Let’s take an example: In the US or American English, the phrase pass out means to distribute or to lose consciousness, but in the UK English the same phrase means to graduate. In fact, some words might even have totally contradictory meanings, like, “to table a measure” implies postponing consideration in the US, as against commence discussion in the UK, and “public school” means a school run by the local government, unlike a private school in British English. Similarly, the word “school” can be used to refer to universities or colleges, and not just grammar school. Again, in the UK English, the abbreviation S.O stands for Sex Offender, while in the US it expands to significant other, a spouse, or girlfriend/boyfriend.

English usage among the US populace often differs from the grammar we learn in school. You will also notice significant dialectal variations throughout the nation. Besides, you will find many Americans, who do not follow some of the prescriptive rules of grammar they were taught in elementary school. Rules that disallow split infinitives and ending a sentence with a preposition are often overlooked. Unlike the UK English, American English is continually evolving as Americans interact with people from all over the world.

The usual response to ‘thank you’ is ‘you’re welcome’, but the same phrase has a different meaning in British English.
So, if you’re considering an education in the US, keeping a small pocket dictionary would be useful. You can also refer to any free American English Dictionary and thesaurus on the web. For example, you can use command define:school to find the definition of school.

Tej Kohli explains the importance of English Proficiency Testing and TOEFL exam in getting admission to the US colleges and Universities.

Proficiency in English is a very important factor in making your stay in the US a pleasurable one. Most US colleges or universities require you to take the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) before the admission is granted. This TOEFL tests your proficiency in English, both in reading and writing. Sometimes, you also need to take the Test of Spoken English (TSE), which evaluates your English speaking ability.

A student seeking admission in the US must score at least 500 on the TOEFL exam and 700 on the new computer based TOEFL. A score of 600 or more is appreciated for fields which require a higher proficiency in English language like literature or journalism, or at more selective colleges.

Some schools accept scores of other tests for English Language Proficiency, like TOEIC, MTELP, IELTS and Cambridge EFL. Others may conduct their own intensive English Program in lieu of the TOEFL. But you’re more likely to take the TOEFL to be eligible for admission at most schools.

There are some colleges what offer on-campus English as Second Language (ESL) programs, where students can get admission without appearing in the TOEFL. After completion of the ESL program, if you score high enough on the TOEFL, you will get admission to their regular academic program. However, it is less expensive to study English Language at your native place and take the TOEFL there than partaking in a school’s ESL program.

It is best to take TOEFL first, and if your score is not good enough, only then you should consider an ESL or any intensive English Program. Your TOEFL score will help you evaluate how much extra you need to study to qualify for admission.

After you get the admission, you will probably have to take the school’s own English proficiency test depending on your score in this exam, they may ask you to enroll for special classes to improve your English reading, writing, listing and speaking skills. Some schools may also offer courses designed to help you learn technical English pertaining to your field of study, make better you study skills and teach job interview and personality development skills.

A US graduate degree is very costly, especially for the international students, who can’t afford the expenses of education in the US because of paucity of funds and institutions offering financial aid and loans. Tej Kohli Blog for study places in US brings you the real scenario of financial aid for international students….

Studying in the US is quite an expensive affair. Expenses on tuition, accommodation and boarding at any undergraduate college may cost anywhere between $15,000 to $40,000, depending on where you’re studying. A graduate or post graduate education can cost even more dearly.

For foreign nationals, except those in Canada and Mexico, there is a very little financial aid available to study in the US. Most scholarships, grants and loans from private and public means are limited to the US citizens only. Hence, those who want to study abroad will find very little information on financial aid for international students. We, at Tej Kohli Blog for study places in US, strive to provide you the most comprehensive information on financial aid for international students.

Given below are the key points, which you must consider before working out your budget on studying abroad. Check out the list below to know what kind of aids are available to international students, and an answer to some of your problems you may face when paying for studying in US.

1.Calculate college expenses
2.Prepare a financial planning worksheet
3.Ascertain your sources of financial aid
4.shortlist colleges/institutions with financial aid for international students
5.Subscribe for useful publications
6.Find out scholarship programs for international students
7.Check out loans available for international students

However, the truth remains that there is very little financial aid available for international students and as a result a lot of students don’t study in the US, for they fail to meet the expenses. This holds especially true for undergraduate students.

Opportunities to study in the UAE has grown since the Federation came into being, when only a handful of the urban populace has access to formal education.

At the moment, UAE offers a complete education package to all students, right from kindergarten to the university with free education for citizens all all levels. You’ll also find a comprehensive private education sector, where thousands of promising students, both males and females, pursue their higher education from abroad and that too at the expense of government.

“With a sound educational infrastructure already in place, the primary focus is now on devising and implementing strategies that will equip the young generation to cope the stress and meet challenges of the 21st century workplace.” says Mr. Tej Kohli, founder of the Ozone Real Estate Group.

The Education system in UAE comprises of several educational institutions like schools, colleges and universities. Plus, there are a variety of training institutes that offer vocational courses and other professional qualification and training programs in diverse fields. Every institute is different and so are their objectives, structure and admission criteria.

UAE has some government universities and colleges too where only citizens can take admission. Private institutions on the other hand accept all students who meets the admission requirements.

You may enroll for any program of your choice. The scope of programs may range from technical, academic and professional degrees in several disciplines.

Housing policies vary from institution to institution. As far as student’s accommodation in USA is concerned, you may find a range of options for single and married students. You can ask your university to provide you with on and off campus accommodation options along with housing application form. This is necessary in point of fact that most campuses have limited on-campus housing options. Thus, make sure you submit your application form early. The options may range from a shared dormitory to a family apartment.

Some undergraduate universities, however, makes it mandatory for students to live in on-campus dormitories.

Most graduate students, on the other hand, prefer to live off-campus either alone or with 2-3 friends. Since each state has different rent bands that to some extent also depend on location, it is important to find out details beforehand.
